Leon's Cloudy Canyon - Sumatra

Leon's Cloudy Canyon is a peculiar dive, not in the classic 'reef teeming with life' way. We love it because it’s so… moody. The name really nails it. You drop in, often with a decent current pushing you west, and you’re immediately enveloped in this hazy, almost ethereal light, especially deeper down. It’s like diving through a watercolor painting. Our favourite part is the drift across the valley floor at around 25 metres. Despite some obvious human construction damage, which is a bit of a shame, the sheer scale of the drift and the unique light play make it worthwhile. You'll spot some impressive staghorn coral formations, plenty of fluted clams, and we even encountered a few black-blotched wrasse darting through the gloom. The visibility can get pretty rough at the bottom, particularly near the stream outlet where you often finish, so prepare for that. It’s a dive for those who appreciate atmospheric conditions and a good, solid drift, rather than macro hunters or pristine coral enthusiasts.
