JAVELLNA IV - Subic Bay

The JAVELLNA IV. Now there's a wreck with real character. This old trawler sits upright on the seabed at a comfortable 18 metres, making it one of Subic's more accessible dives, yet it still packs a punch. It’s classified as a dangerous wreck, mostly because of its fishing net debris and the tight, silty interiors, but for us, that just adds to the adventure. You’ll be navigating through schools of fusiliers, so thick they sometimes block the light filtering into the wheelhouse. We love the way the light plays through the gaps in the superstructure; it casts these incredible shafts onto the deck where lionfish often hover, their fins fanned out. Inside, in what was once the fish hold, you'll find the resident batfish eyeing you as you drift past. It’s not a huge wreck, but we’d suggest spending your bottom time really exploring the nooks and crannies. Look for those small nudibranchs camouflaged on the rusting metal. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where the prop is still partially visible, often home to a moray eel. We think it’s a brilliant site for newer wreck divers or those looking for a relaxed second dive. Just keep an eye on your buoyancy; the silt inside can kick up easily.
