Natacha - Loyalty Islands

Pyramid Point is one of our go-to sites when we want to see how a little human ingenuity can really kickstart an ecosystem. It's essentially a set of concrete pyramids dropped onto a sandy bottom, initially looking a bit stark. But give it a few years, and you get what we see now: a thriving artificial reef. We love descending here, watching the light filter through the water, illuminating the vibrant growth on the concrete. Staghorn corals are taking over, creating intricate shelters. This isn't a drift dive; it's a slow, deliberate exploration, perfect for photographers or those who just want to observe. We've spent entire dives here simply watching the resident Rosy Frogfish, often camouflaged so well you have to really search for them. Keep an eye out for the tiny Pudgy Pygmygoby darting between coral branches. We often spot Gardiner's Headshield Slugs cruising the sandy patches around the structures. Visibility averages around 16m, which is decent, and the max depth of 20m means plenty of bottom time. It’s a genuinely successful example of an artificial reef, proving that sometimes, a helping hand can make all the difference.
