Les Roses de Matavai, Tahiti - Moorea & Tahiti

No Viz Reef. The name itself is a warning, or maybe an invitation to those who appreciate the smaller details. We love this site precisely because it forces you to slow down, to really look. It's a modest pinnacle, the top just peeking out at low tide, then sloping gently to a muddy 13 metres. Don't come here expecting wide-angle vistas; the visibility, as advertised, can drop to a single metre, though we've had days with a generous four or five. What you lose in distance, you gain in intimacy. Our favourite way to dive it is to pick a direction and commit, hovering close to the corals. The Pagoda and Turbinaria corals form dense structures, perfect hiding spots. This is a macro heaven. Look for the Six-line wrasse darting between the branches, or the almost invisible Bluestripe Pipefish tucked into crevices. We've often found small scorpionfish camouflaged on the coral heads, and the Banda Cardinalfish seem to hang in nervous schools. This is a spot for patient divers, those who get a thrill from spotting a well-hidden cowrie shell or a brightly coloured nudibranch. It's a reminder that sometimes the best dives aren't about grand spectacles, but about the miniature worlds that thrive right under your nose. Go slow, then slow down some more.
