Nosy Mitsio is where we go when we really want to switch off. It's a proper boat charter destination, no quick shore dives here, and that isolation is exactly the appeal. We love the dramatic basalt formations above the water and the sheer variety of habitats below - from thriving staghorn coral gardens to deeper reef walls. Currents can pick up around the outer islands, but that’s often when the big stuff cruises past. Think flashes of mahi-mahi in the blue, and schools of blotched grunt holding formation in the lee of the reef. We’ve had incredible encounters with humphead unicornfish here, too, seemingly unafraid and curious. If you can, hit the water early, before the sun gets too high - the light reflecting off the sandy patches always feels special. Don't expect many dive centres; this is more about the liveaboard experience, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace. It’s a wilder side of Madagascar, and that's precisely why it's one of our favourites.

Nosy Be - The Wreck (Mitsio Wreck)
We’ve found Nosy Mitsio’s wreck, often called the Mitsio Wreck, to be a pleasant surprise. It’s a smaller vessel, probably a fishing trawler, sitting upright on the seabed between 18 and 30 metres. What it lacks in grand scale, it makes up for with the sheer density of fish life that has made it home – look for schools of snapper darting in and out of the superstructure, and plenty of nudibranchs if you’re patient enough to really explore the encrusted metal. It’s a good spot for a second dive, offering a relaxed pace and a chance to poke around without strong currents.
Nosy Mitsio - Greg Wall (Mur de Greg)
Greg Wall is one of those places that gets talked about in hushed tones around the liveaboard dinner table. It’s a proper wall dive, dropping away into the blue, and it's absolutely plastered with gorgonians and soft corals – the kind that pulse gently in the current. We’ve had some fantastic encounters here, often spotting reef sharks patrolling the deeper sections and rays gliding past in the open water. Keep an eye out for those massive schools of fusiliers too; they can be so dense they almost block out the light. It's a site that rewards patience and a good drift, suiting divers comfortable with a bit of exposure and looking for those bigger pelagic moments.
Nosy Mitsio - Pain de Sucre (Sugar Loaf)
Pain de Sucre, or Sugar Loaf, is a solid pinnacle dive off Nosy Mitsio. The reef starts around 10 meters and drops away to 35, with plenty to explore in between. Expect strong currents here, which are really what draw in the bigger schools of fish – we've seen everything from fusiliers to trevally hunting in the blue. The hard coral coverage is excellent, a real patchwork of different species clinging to the rock face. It’s a site for competent divers who appreciate a bit of current and the pelagic action it brings.
Nosy Mitsio - The Arc (L'Arc)
The Arc, or L'Arc as the locals call it, is one of those sites you visit for the topography. It’s an archway, naturally carved, sitting around 12 meters down. We’ve seen it busy with schooling snapper sheltering underneath, and sometimes a few larger pelagics cruise by in the blue. The corals around the base are healthy, a mix of hard and soft, supporting plenty of smaller reef fish. It’s a gentle dive, generally, and perfect for photographers looking for a dramatic frame. If you're staying in the Mitsio archipelago, it’s a solid addition to the logbook.
Nosy Mitsio - The Four Brothers (Les Quatre Frères)
The Four Brothers are four distinct basalt pinnacles that punch up from the seabed just off Nosy Mitsio. We love the dramatic topography here, with interesting swim-throughs and plenty of nooks to poke around in, especially between 10 and 20 metres. Keep an eye out for schooling jacks in the bluer water, but it's really the smaller stuff that shines, like scorpionfish tucked into crevices and various nudibranchs on the rocks. While the depths can hit 30 metres, the best of the action is shallower, making it a good spot for divers who enjoy exploring unique rock formations and a mix of macro life.
