Deep Sponge - 2 Mile Reef - Sodwana Bay

Humbug Bay. We love this spot, especially when the main Goat Island crowds are doing their thing elsewhere. It’s got a bit of everything, which makes it one of our favourite all-rounders. Drop in around the boulder fields, near those rocky outcrops, and you're quickly among schools of snapper and demoiselles darting through the kelp. The real draw for us, though, are the caves towards Devil’s Point. They’re not deep, maybe just a few metres in, but they're big enough to poke your head into and see what’s lurking in the shadows – often a rig or a sleepy stingray. Further east, you’ll find a tiered reef, dropping in three distinct steps down to 14 metres. Visibility averages seven metres, so it’s not always a wide-angle dream, but it's usually good enough to appreciate the intricate rock formations and the smaller critters like mottled triplefins and blennies tucked into crevices. The bottom here has a light dusting of silt, so good buoyancy helps keep things clear. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration rather than grand vistas, perfect for a relaxed dive spotting the local residents.
