EASTWAY - Sodwana Bay

Eastway, a grand old steamship that went down way back in 1923, is one of our favourite Sodwana wrecks. She’s big, over 100 meters long, and it feels like you’re dropping onto a submerged city when you first descend. The sheer scale is impressive, with massive boilers, propulsion machinery, and parts of the superstructure still recognisable. We love picking our way along her decks, spotting the huge shoals of fusiliers that hang around the intact sections, sometimes so thick they block out the sun. The Eastway truly feels like a living reef now, not just a hunk of metal. You’ll see plenty of potato bass cruising through the holds and we’ve often encountered reef sharks patrolling the perimeter. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too, like nudibranchs clinging to the coral growth that’s colonised every available surface. It’s a dive that rewards repeat visits; you’ll find something new each time you explore her nooks and crannies. This wreck is perfect for experienced divers who appreciate history and robust reef life.
