FOLDERO - Lofoten Islands

Foldero, now this is a proper Lofoten dive. It’s not about bright colours or balmy water here, it’s about the sheer atmosphere of a wreck, and Foldero delivers on that. This fishing vessel went down in a January storm back in '76, and you can feel that history as you descend. She rests upright, mostly intact, sitting on a silty bottom at 60 metres, so this is definitely one for the experienced cold-water wreck diver, no question. As you drop down, the light fades quickly, and the wreck emerges from the gloom, its mast still reaching towards the surface. We love the way the deck structures are still recognisable. You can swim over the holds, imagining the day's catch. Look closely and you’ll find anemones carpeting the railings and walls, their tentacles swaying gently in the subtle current. Cod and pollock often patrol the wreck, darting in and out of the shadows. The wheelhouse is a highlight, though penetration requires careful planning given the depth. Our favourite time to dive Foldero is actually in the late spring, when there’s a chance of slightly longer daylight hours to soften that deep blue a little. Just remember, the water here is consistently cold, so a drysuit is non-negotiable.
