George Thiele - Lofoten Islands

The George Thiele is our kind of wreck. Forget your sun-drenched, shallow Caribbean wrecks; this is proper, moody North Atlantic diving. Dropping onto the Thiele, you feel the chill of the Lofoten waters, but the visibility, often a crisp 15 metres, means the sheer scale of this colossal cargo ship immediately grabs you. We love working our way along her huge hull, a ghostly steel mountain now home to an incredible amount of life. You’ll find wolfish lurking in shadowy nooks, their grumpy faces peering out, while plump cod patrol the decks. Schools of saithe dart through the superstructure, a silver blur against the gloom. The cargo holds are particularly fascinating, vast empty spaces that feel like submerged cathedrals, and often you’ll spot an inquisitive octopus peeking from a crevice. This is a dive for experienced cold-water wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history and robust marine ecosystems over delicate corals. Bring a good torch and a drysuit, obviously; this isn't a flip-flop kind of dive.
