HEIN HOYER - Lofoten Islands

The Hein Hoyer wreck, a steamer resting at 25m, is a fantastic window into Norway’s wartime history. We always feel a chill, not just from the water, when we descend onto her deck. The visibility here can be surprisingly good, especially on a calm day, letting you really appreciate the scale of her broken hull. What makes Hein Hoyer special for us is how she’s become part of the seabed. Anemones blanket the metal, and the skeletal remains of her superstructure are home to plenty of cod and pollock. We've even spotted the occasional wolf fish lurking in her darker corners. Exploring the stern, where the propeller once pushed her through these very waters, is a highlight. It's a sombre but incredibly atmospheric dive, perfect for wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history as much as marine life. Just be mindful of the currents; they can pick up, so check the local conditions before you splash.
