HMS Effingham - Lofoten Islands

The Châteaurenault wreck in Alonissos Marine Park isn’t just a pile of metal; it’s a time capsule, and that’s why we love it. Sunk in 1917, this French protected cruiser lies in scattered pieces, a result of Allied scuttling rather than a single torpedo hit. What you get here isn't one intact hull, but a sprawling debris field that demands a different kind of exploration. We’ve spent hours tracing the outline of her collapsed bow, imagining the scale, then drifting over twisted plating where groupers now hold court. Visibility here is usually excellent, letting you take in the sheer scope of the wreckage, which feels more like an artificial reef system than a conventional wreck. Our favourite spot is a section of plating that’s home to dozens of boa dragonfish, their cryptic patterns almost invisible against the corroded steel. Keep an eye out for loggerhead turtles; they’re regular visitors, often seen cruising slowly over the deeper sections. This site is a truly special dive for anyone who appreciates history and the way the sea reclaims its own.
