LN-BED (CESSNA AIRCRAFT) - Lofoten Islands
You don’t come to Lofoten for tropical colours. You come for a different kind of magic, and the Cessna LN-BED offers it in spades. We love this wreck because it’s so unexpected at 40 metres, sitting upright on a sandy bottom, a ghost from a different era. The water here is cold, yes, often around 6 degrees Celsius, but usually quite clear, maybe 15-20 metres, which lets you appreciate the whole scene. Dropping down, the aircraft takes shape slowly, its wings still largely intact, the single engine prominent. It’s small enough to circumnavigate in a few minutes, giving you time to poke your head into the cockpit area, imagining the final moments. Schools of pollock often hang around the fuselage, their silver scales catching the light, and we’ve spotted wolfish lurking under the wings more than once. This is a dive for experienced drysuit divers comfortable with depth and colder conditions; it’s not particularly challenging, but that 40-metre mark means good air management is key. Our advice? Go slow, soak it in, and appreciate the stark, serene beauty of this Norwegian classic.
