Z2 Georg Thiele - Lofoten Islands

The Z2 Georg Thiele isn’t just a pile of metal; it’s a time capsule, frozen in its final moments off Narvik. We’ve visited this wreck a few times, and each dive feels like stepping into a historical documentary. Lying at 43 metres, she’s a big destroyer, broken but surprisingly intact in places. You'll drop onto the stern, often met by inquisitive cod weaving through the superstructure. Our favourite part has to be the deck guns – massive, still pointed skywards, like she's ready for another fight. Visibility can swing wildly here, but on a good day, the light penetration through the clear Norwegian water is ethereal. We usually find schools of pollock flitting around the torpedo tubes, and the odd wolfish peeking from a crevice. It’s a site that demands respect and good buoyancy, especially when exploring the more collapsed sections. We’d suggest a double tank set-up to give you ample bottom time to truly appreciate the scale of this war grave. It’s a colder dive, even in summer, so drysuits are a must, but the reward of exploring such a significant piece of history is more than worth the chill.
