Font Estramar - Costa Brava

Font Estramar, tucked away in Costa Brava, isn't your average Mediterranean dive. This is a cavern, pure and simple, and it's absolutely one of our favourite freshwater spots in Europe. We love the feeling of slipping into the cool, still water, the surface shimmering with reflections before you descend into that inky blackness. It’s a true exploration, a dive that asks for respect and good buoyancy. What makes it special? The sheer scale of the system, for one. And the way the light plays at the entrance, slicing through the water, is always a beautiful sight. Deeper inside, it’s all about the geology, the way the rock has been carved and smoothed by centuries of water flow. You might spot a few freshwater crabs scuttling on the silty bottom, or the occasional small fish darting past, but the real show here is the environment itself. This is a dive for experienced cavern or cave divers, those who appreciate the quiet intensity of overhead environments. Go with a local guide who knows the system inside out, and make sure your gear is dialled in. It’s an immersive, almost meditative experience, a real contrast to the vibrant reefs just a short drive away.
