ISABEL - Costa Brava

The Isabel is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to, not for its grand scale, but for its quiet charm. Sitting shallow at just 10 metres, it's a remarkably accessible piece of history, a sailing vessel that met its end just off the coast. You can cruise along the hull, noting how the wooden planks are slowly becoming one with the seabed, and peer into what remains of the cabins. It feels more like exploring an old, sunken fishing boat than a dramatic wreck, and that's precisely why we love it. For photographers, the light here is often fantastic, especially on a sunny afternoon when the rays cut through the water and highlight the resident scorpionfish perched on the deck or the nudibranchs inching across the barnacle-covered timbers. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for warming up or for divers who prefer a more relaxed pace. Our favourite part is watching the schools of damselfish flit in and out of the skeletal framework, a constant, shimmering movement against the muted tones of the wreck. It’s not about huge pelagics here, but about the small, intricate world that has claimed this vessel as its own.
