MARIA JOSE MASIQUES (POSSIBLY) - Costa Brava

There's something about the Maria Jose Masiques that just hits right, even if its identity is still a bit of a whispered rumour among the dive shops. We’re pretty sure it's her, lying at 34 metres off the Costa Brava, and what a superb dive it is. This motor vessel feels substantial, a proper wreck with a story you can almost touch. Diving down, the temperature drops and the light shifts to a deep blue. The hull is draped in a tapestry of life, anemones and sponges clinging on, while schools of sardines shimmer around the superstructure. We love weaving through the holds, imagining cargo long gone, now replaced by curious conger eels peeking from the gloom. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where you often find a lone moray eel surveying its domain. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, perfect for advanced divers who appreciate history and the quiet drama of a deep wreck. If you hit it on a calm day, the visibility can be excellent, making the descent feel like a journey back in time.
