Massa d'Or (la Rata) - Costa Brava

Massa d'Or, or 'la Rata' as the locals call it, is a proper Costa Brava classic. We always aim for this spot when conditions are calm, because the reward is a beautiful, accessible dive. Dropping down, you hit this rocky reef, honeycombed with crevices. It’s not about huge pelagics here, but the sheer density of macro life and the way the light plays through the water. Keep an eye out for the scaldfish, masters of camouflage, flat against the sandy patches, and those vibrant ornate wrasse darting between the rocks. We often find common octopus peeking out from their dens. Our favourite part has to be the feeling of swimming through a school of anchovies so thick it shimmers like a silver curtain. It’s a site that just feels alive, a real snapshot of the Mediterranean. It’s perfect for a relaxed second dive, or anyone who appreciates the finer details of a reef.
