E RUSS - Baltic Coast

We love a wreck that tells a story, and the E Russ certainly does. This isn’t some broken-up pile of metal; she’s an old steamship, sitting upright at 25 metres, almost perfectly preserved by the cold, dark Baltic. You descend into that green twilight and suddenly she’s there, a ghostly outline slowly resolving into a proper ship, masts still reaching up, deck structures largely intact. It’s a genuinely eerie feeling to fin along her main deck, seeing the outlines of cargo holds and superstructures. The visibility often isn't huge, which just adds to the atmosphere, making her loom out of the gloom. Our favourite part is exploring the stern, where the rudder and propeller are still visible, often draped in long strands of green algae that wave gently with the current. This wreck is fantastic for those who appreciate history and the silent beauty of a ship reclaimed by the sea. It’s less about big fish and more about the delicate ecosystem of invertebrates that have made her home – we’ve seen some great nudibranchs here, tucked into crevices, and the occasional Baltic cod skulking in the shadows. We'd suggest going in late summer for the best chance of slightly better light penetration and calmer conditions. It’s a truly atmospheric dive, one you feel long after you’ve surfaced.
