HARBURG - Baltic Coast

The Harburg, she's a proper wreck, isn't she? Not deep, just 10 metres, but that’s precisely what makes her so good. We love a shallow wreck that gives you plenty of bottom time to really snoop around. This old steamship went down after a tussle with the tanker Tinny back in '57, and she's been sitting upright on the seabed ever since, beautifully preserved by the Baltic’s cool embrace. Dropping down, the bow is usually the first thing that materialises from the green haze, often shrouded in a shoal of small fish darting in and out of the broken railings. We always make a point of heading into the cargo holds; they’re surprisingly open and you can navigate them without much fuss. The light filters down, illuminating the ghostly outlines of the frames, and you'll spot crabs scuttling across the seabed inside. The stern section is also great for exploring, the propeller still largely intact, and we’ve often found a big cod lurking under there. Visibility can vary, but generally, when it's good, you can see a good chunk of her, making for some excellent photo opportunities. She’s perfect for divers who appreciate history and want to spend a good long while exploring without the pressure of depth.
