MERCHANT ROYAL - Cornwall & Devon

The Merchant Royal is a proper deep wreck, sitting bolt upright at 54m and demanding respect. It’s less about poking around for small stuff and more about appreciating the sheer scale of the thing. We love seeing how the metalwork has become a home, with enormous ling often lurking in the superstructure and conger eels peering from every dark recess. Diving the Royal means planning your gas carefully; bottom time here is precious. We’d suggest focusing on the midships, where you can still make out the three massive boilers and the triple-expansion engine. The hull itself is slowly collapsing, but you get a real sense of its former grandeur, a testament to a bygone era of steamships. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical for the UK, but when it’s good, the light penetration creates an ethereal glow around the upper decks. This one’s for experienced technical divers, no question, and it really rewards patience and a steady hand. You’re not just diving a wreck; you’re diving into history.
