The water is cold, yes, but it’s often startlingly clear, especially after a spell of settled weather. We’d suggest investing in a good drysuit or a very thick wetsuit, and maybe some thicker gloves than you’re used to. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, it’s 15 metres and more, with the light filtering down through the kelp creating an almost cathedral-like feel. Our favourite dives often involve poking around old fishing boats or wartime debris, discovering crabs scuttling amongst the rust. There’s a quiet beauty to the Scottish dive sites, a real sense of wildness you don’t find everywhere.
