HMS M E 1016 - North Sea Coast

The HMS M E 1016 is a rare treat. A German minelayer from WWII, scuttled in ‘46, it sits in just two meters of water. We love a shallow wreck, especially one with a story. You'll find it west of Thyborøn, close enough to shore that you don’t need a boat if you’re up for a surface swim. What you get here is pure history, totally accessible. The wreck is broken up, sure, but the bow and stern sections are still distinct. You can fin right over the plating, seeing the dark outlines of the structure beneath the surface. Visibility varies, but when it’s good, you can make out the scale of the thing. Schools of juvenile coalfish often swarm the metalwork, darting into the nooks and crannies. Our favourite tip? Go on a calm day, obviously, but also try for a low tide. The water clarity seems to perk up, and the light penetration is incredible. It’s perfect for new divers or anyone who just wants an easy, engaging dive without the stress of depth or strong currents.
