HUGO ZEYE - North Sea Coast

The Hugo Zeye, a German training vessel sunk by a mine in 1945, offers a compelling dive into history for those willing to brave the North Sea. At 18 metres, it’s a reasonably accessible wreck, though Denmark’s conditions mean you’ll want to pick your day carefully. We love the sheer scale of it, a proper 146-meter behemoth lying on its side, mostly intact, which is remarkable for a ship of its age in these waters. Dropping down, the gloom always adds to the drama, and the superstructure looms large, often shrouded in a hazy green. We’d suggest a good torch, not just for penetration, but to really pick out the details on the deck and hull. Crabs scuttle in the shadows, and we’ve seen some decent cod patrolling the deeper sections. Our favourite part has to be the stern, where you can often make out the rudder and prop shaft. It’s a site for experienced wreck divers who appreciate the historical context and don’t mind a bit of a current.
