LOFTEVERKET - North Sea Coast

Lofteverket, a barge that capsized and sank in '87, lies in a spot that feels a bit more North Sea than anything else. You’ll hit the deck around 38 metres, so this isn't one for a quick splash. We've always found the story of its sinking, under tow by a tug named Fred Flintstone, strangely amusing. The wreck itself is big, 85 metres long, lying upside down, which makes for some unusual swim-throughs if you're comfortable with overhead environments. It’s dark down there, even on a sunny day. Bring your torches because the light doesn’t penetrate much beyond the surface. What we love about Lofteverket is the sheer scale of the thing and how life has colonised every surface. We’ve seen substantial cod sheltering in the shadow of the upturned hull and large conger eels peering from deeper crevices. Our favourite part is navigating the interior spaces – carefully, mind you – and feeling the immense structure all around. The visibility can be variable, but when it's good, seeing the full length of the barge stretch into the gloom is quite something. This site suits experienced divers who appreciate deep, challenging wreck dives with a real sense of history.
