MONGOLIA - North Sea Coast

Mongolia, a steamship that met its end in Kiel Bay in 1940, sits at 19 metres, making it a solid recreational dive. We always find something new here. The wreck itself is remarkably intact for a vessel bombed during the war, with a good chunk of the bow and stern still recognisable. Swimming along the deck, you can imagine the ship in its working days. Visibility varies, of course – it’s the North Sea – but on a good day, the light filtering through the green water gives the wreck a moody, atmospheric feel. Our favourite part is the engine room access. It’s tight, but definitely worth a peek for suitably experienced divers; the machinery is still quite impressive. For marine life, expect the usual suspects making a home here: cod often patrol the deeper sections, and we’ve seen some decent-sized conger eels tucked into shadowy corners. Look closely and you’ll find plenty of crabs scuttling over the plates. This site is best for divers with some wreck experience who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of current.
