PALLAS - North Sea Coast

The Pallas, a tanker sunk by a mine in 1943, holds a real pull for us along the North Sea coast. It’s not about bright colours or dizzying depths; it’s the sheer atmosphere down at 17 metres. We’re talking about a wreck that feels like a sleeping giant, stretched out on the seabed. Dropping down, the light filters through the green water in shafts, often catching the suspended particles that give the North Sea its character. The wreck itself is reasonably intact, with some impressive structural elements still standing. You can swim over the deck, peer into cargo holds, and often spot the massive propellers. Our favourite part is navigating the twisted metal plates and superstructure, where lumpsuckers often cling, their tiny eyes watching you pass. The wreck is heavily colonised by dead man's fingers and anemones, making the dark metal surfaces surprisingly textured. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and the quiet, often dramatic beauty of cold-water wrecks. Keep an eye on the current here; it can pick up, so we always suggest checking the local tide tables and aiming for slack water, especially if you want to explore the more exposed sections.
