PAMPERO - North Sea Coast

The Pampero, a sailing vessel that found its final resting place in the North Sea, is a genuinely engaging dive. At 30 metres, it's a solid intermediate dive, feeling like a proper North Sea wreck without being overly challenging. We love how intact much of it remains, especially for a wreck of its age; you can still discern the bow and stern, the lines of its wooden hull. Exploring the Pampero is like stepping back in time. You’ll drift over ribs and deck plating now heavily encrusted with dead man's fingers and anemones, which in turn are often swarming with small crabs and blennies. The visibility here can be temperamental, shifting from a soupy five metres to a surprisingly clear fifteen, often dependent on the tides. We'd suggest aiming for slack water to get the best views and to avoid fighting any strong pushes. While you won't find tropical fish here, the sheer density of local life, like the huge conger eels peering out from gaps and the schools of cod darting between timbers, makes it feel alive. This site is our pick for anyone who appreciates the history wrapped up in a wreck, and the rugged beauty of a cold-water dive.
