Alright, Ægir. This isn't your postcard-perfect Caribbean drift, so let's be clear about that from the start. What you *do* get here, though, is a properly wild, rugged slice of North Sea diving. We’ve found the entry can be a bit of a scramble over the rocks, so definitely wear sturdy boots and time your dive for calmer conditions – a northerly breeze usually makes it manageable. Once you’re in, it’s a surprisingly busy place. The bottom is mostly sand and shingle, but look closer. We always spot flatfish, particularly dab, trying their best to vanish into the substrate. There are plenty of hermit crabs scuttling around, and we’ve even seen small pike lurking in the weedier patches. It’s a macro playground, really. The Irish moss and carragheen wave about in the surge, providing cover for tiny gobies and an occasional eel. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the subtle beauty of temperate waters, for divers who love to poke around and discover the small things often overlooked. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical for the North Sea, but on a good day, when the sun breaks through, the colours of the anemones against the darker rocks are quite striking. Our favourite memory here is watching a pair of Razorbills dive bombing for fish, a real treat when you’re on the surface.
Safety Notes
Cold water this month (avg 13°C). Drysuit or thick wetsuit (7mm+) recommended.
