Svendborgsund - North Sea Coast

The HMS Sparrow wreck off Kaikōura is one of those sites that just feels right for a bit of exploration. We're talking about an old gunboat, sunk back in 1907. She lies broken, spread across the seabed, giving you plenty of nooks and crannies to poke your head into. What we really love about this site is how the sea has completely taken it over. You'll glide past large sections of hull, now encrusted with those fascinating light-bulb sea squirts, glowing faintly in your torch beam. We've seen snapper cruising the deeper sections, and blue mackerel schooling around the more intact parts of the superstructure. Keep an eye out for a leopard seal, especially in the cooler months – they're infrequent visitors but incredible to encounter. The wreckage itself isn't a single, towering structure; it's more like an underwater archaeological dig, with various pieces scattered. This makes for a more organic dive, where each section reveals something new. Our pick for a good dive here is on a calm day with minimal swell, as the visibility can be a bit variable. It's a fantastic spot for divers who enjoy piecing together a story from what they see, rather than just admiring a pristine, intact wreck.
