Wreck of U-8 - North Sea Coast

Diving the U-8 is a proper journey back in time, and for us, that’s its main draw. Lying out in the North Sea, off Denmark’s west coast, this isn’t your sun-drenched tropical dive. This is proper European wreck diving – cold water, often green, but utterly rewarding if you’re into history. We’ve been out here a few times, and each trip feels like we’re part of a secret club. She’s a Type IIB U-boat, sunk in 1945, and she still holds the brooding presence of her wartime past. You'll drop down onto a dark shape that slowly resolves into the distinct lines of a submarine. It’s a complete wreck, largely intact, sitting upright on the seabed. We love tracing her conning tower, imagining the cramped quarters below. Penetration is possible for experienced wreck divers into certain sections, but even just exploring the exterior is fascinating. You can fin along the deck, peer into the torpedo tubes, and really get a sense of her scale. Life here is hardy. Look for the massive cod that often lurk in the shadow of the hull, and the huge crabs that scuttle over the metal plates. The wreck has become an artificial reef, draped in anemones and dead man’s fingers, which create a surprising amount of texture and colour against the steel. Visibility can swing wildly; we’ve had days where it’s a murky ten metres, and others where a good twenty metres opens up, letting you see the full length of her. Our tip: go in late summer or early autumn for the best chance of settled weather and clearer water. It’s a dive that suits experienced cold-water divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a current.
