Diving with Kids: What You Need to Know
Most dive agencies allow children from age 8 to participate in Bubblemaker or Seal Team programmes in confined water (pools). From age 10, children can earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification, which allows dives to 12 metres with a certified adult. At 12, the depth limit increases to 18 metres (Junior Advanced Open Water), and at 15, all adult certifications become available.
The best family diving destinations offer shallow, protected reef systems where junior divers can experience incredible marine life within their depth limits. A reef teeming with clownfish, sea turtles, and parrotfish at 8 metres is far more exciting for a young diver than a deep wall requiring advanced skills.
