GUAICAMACUTO - Tobago

Guaicamacuto isn't your typical Caribbean wreck. We love it because it’s a bit unusual, a shallow carrier that ran aground on Darien Rock back in '85. With a maximum depth of just two metres, this is truly a snorkel or very shallow free dive spot. It’s perfect for those days when the deeper sites are a bit surly, or if you’ve got non-diving friends who still want a taste of Tobago’s underwater history. The ship itself, a good 111 metres long, is spread out. You're not going to swim through intact cabins, but rather weave around large, rusted sections, plates, and ribs. Sunlight pierces the surface, illuminating the metal in shifting patterns as the waves move overhead. Look closely, and you’ll spot parrotfish grazing on the algae-covered steel, and sometimes a shy octopus tucked into a crevice. It’s a compelling glimpse of a ship slowly being reclaimed by the ocean, a surprisingly tranquil scene despite its wreck classification.
