MACABI - Tobago

There’s a real gravitas to the Macabi, a vessel taken by a mine in 1942. We love that you’re diving a piece of history, not just another pile of metal. Lying at 32 meters, she’s well-preserved for her age and depth, which means good penetration opportunities for experienced wreck divers. You can explore the engine room, swim through cargo holds that once carried sugar and rum, and even poke your head into the stern where the propeller still sits. The wreck acts as a fantastic artificial reef. Giant barrel sponges burst from the hull, and every crevice seems to host something interesting. We've seen massive green moray eels peering from broken portholes and schools of horse-eye jacks circling above the mast. Visibility can swing here, sometimes it’s 25 meters, other days it's a bit hazier, maybe 15 meters, adding to the atmospheric feel of the dive. If you’re into wreck diving with a story, and you appreciate the quiet stillness of a deep, historical site, the Macabi is our favourite pick in Tobago. Just keep an eye on your bottom time.
