Maverick Wreck - Tobago

The Maverick, oh, she’s a beauty. This old passenger ferry, deliberately sunk in 1997, is our pick for a proper wreck dive in Tobago, sitting upright between 15 and 30 metres. We love dropping onto her deck, watching the light play through the open cabins. You can poke around the passenger compartments, swim through the car deck, and even pop into the bridge – just watch your buoyancy, it’s a tight squeeze in places. What makes her special? It’s the way the Caribbean has completely claimed her. The railings are thick with soft corals, and the hull is a tapestry of sponges. We’ve had barracuda hover motionless off the bow, eyeing us up, and the schools of horse-eye jacks can be incredible, swirling like a silver tornado. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff too; we often spot spinyhead blennies peeking from crevices and the occasional slipper sole camouflaged on the deck. It’s an intermediate dive, perfect for those comfortable with deeper profiles and a bit of current, which can sometimes sweep across the site. Aim for early morning, before other boats stir up the sand.
