VIKING - Tobago

The Viking. What a story. A work boat that partially sank off Trinidad back in '75, then got itself moved to Tobago and fully scuttled. She sits shallow, just three metres down, which means long bottom times and gorgeous light. We love sites like this, where you get a real sense of history mixed with burgeoning new life. Dive the Viking and you're finning over a piece of industrial heritage, now a home for the reef. The wreck itself is reasonably intact for something that’s been down since disco was king. We’ve seen schools of snapper tucked into her hull and barracuda cruising lazily overhead, their scales catching the sunlight. Look closely in the nooks and crannies; you’ll often spot a moray eel peeking out or a trumpetfish trying its best to blend in with the rusty metalwork. It’s a great spot for photographers, especially with that vibrant Caribbean light playing on the wreck. Perfect for snorkelers and newer divers too, offering a real wreck experience without the depth or deco concerns. Our favourite time to visit is mid-morning, before any strong afternoon breezes stir things up, and the light is just perfect.
