WAMARA - Tobago

WAMARA is a curious one. Not your typical Caribbean wreck, that’s for sure. This old motor vessel went down in 1931, hitting a rock on its way from Guyana to Trinidad, and she sits in remarkably shallow water – just two metres. You’ll barely need a snorkel, let alone a tank, to explore it. We love how the wreck isn't intact; it’s more of a scattered, barnacle-encrusted memory of a ship, spread across the rocky seabed. You can trace its outline, imagine the bow and stern, but it’s the way the ocean has reclaimed it that really captivates us. Schools of tiny silversides shimmer around the rusted plates, and we often spot juvenile parrotfish picking at the algae. It’s an easy, relaxing drift, perfect for those days when you just want to potter about and observe the smaller inhabitants. We’d suggest going at high tide for the best visibility, when the water settles and you can really make out the details of the engine block and scattered hull sections. Don't expect dramatic swim-throughs, but do expect a peaceful, shallow investigation into history.
