JU YUNG NO 1 - Vaavu Atoll

The *Ju Yung No 1* is a bit of a departure from Vaavu’s usual channel dives. This isn’t a deep, current-swept drift, but a surprisingly accessible shallow wreck, perfect for a long, relaxed dive. We love this site because it feels like stepping back in time, rather than just seeing a pile of metal. Sunk in 1971, this old fishing vessel rests upright on the reef top, her bow just breaking the surface. Maximum depth is a mere 8 metres, which means fantastic light and extended bottom times. We usually find the visibility here to be excellent, letting you make out the ship’s structure from a distance. As you get closer, you’ll see soft corals and anemones have really taken hold, transforming the old hull into a living reef. Inside the holds, schools of glassfish shimmer, creating a silver curtain, and we’ve often spotted lionfish lurking in the shadows. It’s a great spot for macro photography too; look for nudibranchs and flatworms making a home on the rust. This site suits divers who appreciate history and close-up exploration more than adrenaline. It's also an ideal second dive or a fantastic spot for snorkelers and even freedivers to enjoy alongside the scuba team.
