CLARA GWYNNE - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Clara Gwynne, a trawler resting at 27 metres, is our pick for a quick, satisfying wreck dive off the Scottish East Coast. She's not enormous, 15.2 metres long, but what she lacks in size she makes up for in character. Dropping down, you'll see the deck house is mostly intact, a dark maw inviting you in if you're comfortable with overhead environments. We love exploring the wheelhouse, imagining the last moments before she went down in '94. Around the wreck, the local critters have made themselves at home. Look closely in the nooks and crannies for squat lobsters, their tiny claws waving, and we've often seen wolf fish peeking out from beneath the hull, big grumpy faces regarding you with suspicion. The ambient light at 27 metres is often a muted green, giving the whole scene a rather eerie, peaceful feel. This dive is perfect if you appreciate compact, well-colonised wrecks that you can properly get to grips with on a single tank, especially for those blustery days when you want something a bit more sheltered.
