CLARE (POSSIBLY) - Scottish East Coast & Borders

We’re going to be honest, the Clare is a bit of an enigma. When we first heard about a possibly mined steamship, lost in 1939, it piqued our interest. Turns out, finding official records is tougher than a winter dive here. But that’s part of the draw, isn't it? Descending to 51 metres, you’re not just diving a wreck; you’re exploring a maritime ghost story. The wreck itself is around 60 metres long, and while the official reports classify it as non-dangerous, that depth means you need to be comfortable and competent. We love the way the hull has become a haven for life down here. Think plump plumose anemones, their feathery tentacles swaying with the gentle surge, and dead man’s fingers clinging to the darker recesses. You’ll spot the glint of curious cod peering from shadowy nooks and crannies. It’s a proper expedition, and frankly, that sense of discovery is what we chase on the Scottish East Coast. Best dived on a slack tide, obviously, to truly appreciate the ghostly stillness. We think it’s a site for those who appreciate a bit of mystery with their deco.
