COUNTESS OF MAR - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The *Countess of Mar* is our pick for a unique shallow wreck experience on the Scottish East Coast. Sitting in just two metres of water, this site is less about depth and more about history you can touch. We love how accessible it is, perfect for snorkelers or new divers looking to get a feel for a real wreck without the pressure of depth. You’re really diving into a time capsule here. The wooden ribs of the schooner, wrecked back in 1847, are still largely intact, forming a skeletal framework that’s been completely adopted by the local marine life. Look closely within the timbers and you’ll find crabs scuttling, small blennies darting, and anemones clinging to the aged wood. Visibility can vary, but even on an average day, the sheer amount of detail in the wreck’s structure, combined with the way light plays through the shallow water, makes it genuinely captivating. We’d suggest a calm day with minimal swell to really appreciate the finer points. It’s a gentle exploration, ideal for an extended surface interval or a leisurely second dive.
