ELZIENA - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Elziena. If you’re into the drama of history and a decent depth, this wreck delivers. She went down fast after an air attack in 1940, carrying onions from Antwerp to Leith. You can almost feel the chaos when you descend, the water often dark and cool, making that sudden appearance of her hull even more striking. We love the way the Elziena has settled, quite upright, making navigation relatively straightforward even at 56 metres. The bow is particularly intact, a great spot to imagine her last moments. What really makes her special, though, is how marine life has absolutely colonised her. We’ve seen conger eels poking out from every dark corner, their heads like grizzled old men, and the odd wolf fish peering from under plating. Our favourite is spotting the jewel anemones that sparkle like tiny, scattered gems when your torch beam hits them. Definitely one for experienced divers comfortable with colder water and deeper profiles, but the reward is a truly atmospheric dive into a piece of wartime history.
