ELZIENA (POSSIBLY) - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Elziena. If you’re a wreck diver with a soft spot for history and a solid grasp of your trimix, this is a belter. We love the sheer sense of discovery down here, despite the cold. She sits upright at 47 metres, a victim of German aircraft in 1940, and the two lost crew members are a stark reminder of the war. The visibility, when it’s good, can be surprisingly clear, allowing you to really take in the scale of her. You’ll find the engine room surprisingly open, a real treat for penetration, though always exercise caution. We’ve seen conger eels snaking through the bulkheads, and the deck, though collapsing in places, is home to dense patches of plumose anemones, their white tentacles waving gently in the faint current. It’s a challenging dive, certainly not for the inexperienced, but the intact nature of the wreck and its quiet, solemn atmosphere make it a truly rewarding experience for technical divers. Bring your drysuit, naturally.
