HAUXLEY - Scottish East Coast & Borders

Hauxley is our kind of dive. It’s barely a dive, really, more of a snorkel or even a paddle, but we love it for its sheer accessibility and surprising character. This old steamship lies right in the shallows, often poking parts above the waterline, which makes it perfect for a low-tide exploration. You’re talking about a maximum depth of maybe a metre, so it’s all about surface conditions. What you’ll see here is a wonderfully broken-up wreck, its iron ribs and plates forming mini-habitats. We’ve spent hours just watching the schools of tiny pollack darting through the girders, while crabs scuttle over the rusty hull sections. On a calm day, with a bit of sun, the water clarity can be surprisingly good, letting you really appreciate how the seaweed and anemones have taken hold. It’s a fantastic spot for photographers looking for an easy subject, or for divers who want a relaxed way to get their fix without the fuss of heavy gear. We’d suggest a thick wetsuit even in summer; it is the North Sea, after all.
