HMS GELSINA - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The HMS Gelsina isn’t some shallow-water doddle, but for those with the training and the right kit, she’s a genuinely rewarding dive. Sitting bolt upright at 58 metres, this armed trawler has a surprisingly intact superstructure, which is always a bonus when you're looking for character in a wreck. We love the way the deck gun still points defiantly from the bow, and you can easily make out the bridge area and engine room skylights. Drop down to her, and the stern section often delivers encounters with conger eels peering from every conceivable nook. The current can be brisk here, so good buoyancy is key, but it also means the visibility tends to be excellent, often pushing 20 metres on a good day. Our favourite time to dive her is on the slack before flood, giving you a chance to really absorb the detail. She’s definitely one for technical divers, but what you get in return is a deep, quiet dive on a proper piece of history, far from any crowds.
