LIVLIG - Scottish East Coast & Borders

LIVLIG, tucked away on Scotland's east coast, isn't your typical Caribbean wreck dive. Forget warm water and endless visibility. This is a cold-water dive that demands respect, but for those who brave it, the reward is a truly atmospheric experience. We love the history here – a sailing vessel lost in a gale in 1917, all hands saved, thanks to the RNLI. That story alone gives the dive a certain gravitas. The wreck itself sits at 25m, often shrouded in that moody green light so characteristic of Scottish waters. As you descend, the shape slowly materialises, barnacle-encrusted timbers and corroded metal. It's not one of those intact wrecks you swim through bow to stern; instead, it's a broken-up tapestry of beams and plates, creating endless nooks and crannies. We’ve spent many a dive here just exploring the debris field, poking around with our torches. You'll find edible crabs tucked into crevices, their eyes glinting in your beam, and often a decent-sized cod patrolling the perimeter. The sheer amount of anemones covering every surface is impressive – dahlia anemones in particular add splashes of orange and red to the muted palette. This site is definitely for experienced cold-water divers who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a challenge. Our favourite time to dive LIVLIG is on a calm, overcast day, when the low light filters through the water just so, giving the wreck an almost ghostly presence.
