MAYORESS PELICAN - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Mayoredd Pelican is a big, boxy beast, a barge that went down while under tow back in '96. Sitting upright at 26 metres, it's quickly become one of our favourite wreck dives off the Scottish East Coast because it's such a robust structure. You descend onto this huge, flat deck, often finding it swarming with butterfish darting in and out of every crevice. We’ve spent whole dives just poking around the edges, spotting curious conger eels tucked away in the darker corners and the occasional monkfish camouflaged on the sediment nearby. What makes it special isn't intricate machinery, it’s the sheer bulk and the way life has just exploded over its industrial skeleton. The visibility here can be decent, especially on a neap tide, allowing you to appreciate the scale of the thing. It’s a great site for divers who love exploring a solid wreck, not too deep, with plenty of nooks for marine life, but without the tight penetrations that some other sites demand. We often find ourselves just hovering over the deck, watching the small crabs scuttling over the rust, a proper peaceful dive.
