NYON (BOW SECTION) - Scottish East Coast & Borders
The Nyon's bow section is one of our favourite North Sea wreck dives, hands down. Yes, it’s a bit of a commitment to get out here, but the rewards are there. This isn’t some jumbled mess of metal; you’re dropping onto the intact forward third of a substantial cargo ship, lying on its starboard side. The sheer scale hits you first. We're talking massive plates of steel, still riveted together, with huge frames and supports creating an almost architectural feel. You can swim through cavernous cargo holds, easily penetrating a good distance inside, always keeping an eye on your exit point of course. Light streams in from various openings, illuminating schools of saithe that hang motionless, then dart away as you approach. We've seen some impressive lobsters tucked deep into crevices here, and the kelp growth on the upper sections provides great shelter for smaller wrasse and blennies. The visibility can vary dramatically, but on a good day, when it stretches to 10-15 metres, the sense of exploring a truly lost vessel is profound. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the history, the engineering, and the quiet colonisation of man-made structures by the sea.
