OCEAN GLEANER - Scottish East Coast & Borders

The Ocean Gleaner, a fishing vessel that went down in 1976, sits right below Dunbar Castle. At just 10m deep, it’s an easy dive, perfect for extended bottom times and a proper look around. We love how accessible it is; you can often get a good half-hour exploring the steel hull, which is now well broken up but still recognisable as a fishing boat. What you'll find here is a wreck that feels more like a small, artificial reef. Crabs scuttle in the gaps, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large lobsters tucked into the more sheltered spots. The metalwork is completely encrusted with anemones and hydroids, shifting colours in the ambient light. It’s a site that really comes alive when there's a bit of sun filtering through, making the colours pop. We usually try to time our dives for an incoming tide, as the visibility tends to clear up nicely, offering better views of the structure and its inhabitants. It’s not a deep, dramatic wreck, but it’s a charming, vibrant little dive, ideal for photographers or anyone wanting a relaxed exploration without the nitrogen penalty.
