VILDFUGL - Scottish East Coast & Borders

Vildfugl, a tanker resting off Fifeness Point, is a solid Scottish wreck dive, especially if you catch it on a good day. We’ve been out there when the North Sea has that glassy calm, and it makes all the difference. She ran ashore back in '51, a single-shaft oil engine vessel built just ten years prior, and now she's a sprawling metal garden. What we really appreciate about the Vildfugl is how accessible the structure is. You can follow the length of her 47.5-meter hull, seeing the plates where the stern once met the sandy bottom. The bow section is often the highlight, especially with light filtering through the shallower parts. Expect to see plenty of local characters: inquisitive wrasse darting in and out of the twisted metal, crabs scuttling amongst the anemones that coat the exposed beams. On a clear day, the visibility can stretch to a decent 10-15 meters, letting you appreciate the sheer scale of her demise. It’s a great dive for anyone comfortable with wreck penetration, or just keen to explore the outside structure and its resident critters. We’d always suggest timing your dive around slack water; those Fifeness currents can be surprisingly frisky.
