Wreck of Echo - Scottish East Coast & Borders

We love a good deep wreck, and the Echo off the Scottish East Coast definitely delivers. Plunging down to around 40 metres, this cargo steamer lies largely intact on a silty seabed. The water here always feels a bit colder, a bit darker, adding to the thrill as the massive silhouette slowly materialises from the gloom. You can fin past her huge propeller, still bolted to the shaft, then explore the cavernous holds where we’ve often found conger eels coiled amongst the twisted metal. Our favourite spot is the bridge area; it’s a tangle of collapsed beams and plating, but light filters through in interesting ways, illuminating schools of saithe that dart around like silver arrows. Visibility can be a gamble, but on a good day, when the sun penetrates, the scale of the wreck is truly impressive. This one is definitely for experienced divers comfortable with deeper, colder conditions and who appreciate the quiet history of a sunken ship.
